AI search readiness fundamentals
Prepare a site for AI-assisted search with ordinary search eligibility, useful original content, accurate representation, and first-party measurement.
Direct answer
Start with ordinary search eligibility: make important pages accessible to crawling, get them indexed and eligible to appear with a snippet, publish useful original material, and keep visible facts and markup aligned. Then measure the first-party data each platform actually exposes. Google says its generative Search features do not require special AI schema, llms.txt, or an AI-specific rewrite.
Readiness is a chain, not a score
A page cannot participate in a search feature if the search system cannot access or process it. It is not useful merely because it repeats common information, and it is not trustworthy when markup, copy, and actual product behavior disagree. Readiness spans technical access, actual search eligibility, editorial value, accurate representation, and meaningful measurement.

Build the ordinary technical foundation
- Important pages can be reached through ordinary links.
- Robots rules and page directives reflect publishing intent.
- Each canonical URL returns a working response.
- Main content is available to search rendering.
- Duplicate URL patterns are intentionally managed.
- Pages remain usable on mobile and without excessive delay.
Google says a page must already be indexed and eligible to appear with a snippet to qualify for its generative Search features. Its technical minimums still include an unblocked Googlebot, an HTTP 200 response, and indexable content. Passing those checks creates eligibility; it does not guarantee indexing or serving.
Google is also rolling out a property-level Search generative AI control to a subset of Search Console owners. Inclusion is the default. Where the control is available, excluding the property makes its content ineligible for AI Overviews, AI Mode, and generative features in Discover.
Contribute something identifiable
A readiness review should be able to point to the page's contribution. That might be a tested procedure, measurements, original photographs, a documented policy, first-hand comparison criteria, expert interpretation, or a useful tool. Rephrasing the same generic summary in more words does not add the same value.
A generic page says, “A 301 redirect permanently sends one URL to another.” A useful migration guide shows an old-to-new mapping, explains when a change is not worth making, identifies canonical and sitemap updates, and supplies a monitoring checklist. The basic fact remains, but the page helps someone complete a decision.
Use accurate structure without markup mythology
Use headings, lists, tables, and semantic elements when they help people and assistive technology navigate the page. Use supported structured data when the visible page qualifies for a relevant search feature, and keep that markup current and accurate.
Google explicitly says structured data is not required for generative Search and that there is no special schema.org type for it. Google Search also ignoresllms.txt for visibility and does not require content to be broken into arbitrary “AI chunks.” llms.txt remains a community proposal that other systems may choose to use; it is not a crawling or access-control file.
Measure what each platform actually exposes
Google is rolling out separate generative performance reports to a subset of Search Console properties. The Search report covers impressions from AI Overviews and AI Mode with page, country, date, and device dimensions. The Discover report covers impressions from generative features in Discover with page, country, and date dimensions. Neither report provides citations, a generative ranking, or the exact role a page played in an answer.
Bing's AI Performance public preview reports citations, cited pages, sampled grounding queries, and trends across supported Microsoft experiences. Bing cautions that those aggregate citation measurements do not indicate ranking, authority, placement, or a page's role within an individual answer.
Combine exposure data with qualified visits, signups, leads, sales, or completed tasks. A single impression or citation does not establish business value or causation.
Readiness review questions
- Can a crawler and a person reach the primary page without a hidden workflow?
- Is the page indexed, snippet-eligible, and represented by a stable canonical URL?
- What specific evidence, experience, or utility does it add?
- Do visible facts, metadata, feeds, and structured data agree?
- Are source dates and time-sensitive claims maintained?
- Can the team connect available exposure data to meaningful downstream outcomes?
Google states that meeting requirements and best practices does not guarantee crawling, indexing, or serving. Plainview reports observable conditions to inspect, not an “AI visibility score,” ranking forecast, or citation promise.
